Music and Technology students will gain not only the skills and technological aptitude necessary for any actively engaged musician, but cultivate an insight into the mutually dependent nature of music and technology. With such insight, our students actively engage the critical thinking necessary to implement creative and technical innovation in music.

All Music and Technology students will complete a rigorous curriculum that will include courses in music theory, history, composition, production, sound design, electronic music, instrumental proficiency and technological innovation. The curriculum will prepare the student for a future within a field in which creative innovation and technological implementation is a critical requisite. The Music and Technology major at Stevens is focused on providing a well-balanced course of study that will prepare the student for the ever-increasing demands of today’s musicians.

Student Outcomes

• Artistic Foundations: Students will demonstrate a mastery of fundamentals of theory, ear training, music history, and performance that will enhance their ability to create artistic, innovative, and effective music and sound presentations.

• Creative Implementation of Technology: Students will understand the scientific principles of audio engineering, sound synthesis, and sound production by engaging with technological tools through innovative implementation.

• Leadership & Teamwork: Students will be able, both independently and within a team context, to create and develop work: project managing, staying open to criticism, and engaging with the wider contexts surrounding their ideas and implementations.

• Ethics and Professionalism: Students will be able to identify and actively assess the ethical problems facing music and sound professionals, and aim to achieve standards of quality, reliability, equity, integrity, and accountability in accord with professional practices.

• Research: Students will design and conduct individual research in artistic and scholarly contexts, demonstrating the interdependency of creativity and critical interpretation using appropriate theories and methods.

• Historical Foundations and Communication: Students will understand historical contexts and learn to articulate their artistic, scholarly, and professional practices in written and spoken form.
