Program Description
Ocean, coastal and naval engineers focus on solving the complex challenges associated with our growing use and stewardship of oceans and coastal regions. Their work spans key areas such as national defense, maritime transportation, sustainability, coastal resilience and renewable energy. These engineers apply expertise in fluid dynamics, structural design and environmental science to develop innovative technologies and resilient systems that promote the safe, efficient and sustainable use of ocean and coastal resources while protecting vibrant coastal habitats now and into the future. Ocean Engineering at Stevens offers comprehensive education related to design and evaluation of marine systems (ships, underwater vehicles, marine energy converters, etc.) and development, maintenance and protection of coastal areas (sustainable use of ocean resources, impact of climate change and sea level rise, and prediction and recovery from coastal flooding). Students gain specialized knowledge in naval architecture, coastal engineering and marine energy systems, while developing hands-on skills through access to world-class facilities like the Davidson Laboratory and the coastal engineering research group field assets.
Program Objectives
The Bachelor of Engineering in Ocean Engineering program's mission is to provide a broad-based education and depth within a selected concentration of naval or coastal engineering, to prepare students in technical and scientific fundamentals that will enable them to have a substantial impact.
