Program Description

The General Engineering Minor provides non-Engineering students at Stevens with limited access to the Engineering Core (including the Engineering Design Spine), a series of courses developed specifically to train the next generation of interdisciplinary engineers and complex thinkers. The Minor introduces students to aspects of computer-aided design, programming, mechanics, sensor systems, and materials they might otherwise not otherwise learn, with the option to specialize in thermodynamics or circuits. This Minor is expected to provide non-Engineering students with skills conducive to pursuing future engineering-adjacent careers and/or working on technical projects with classically trained engineers.

Program Objectives

  1. Design parts, assemblies, and engineering drawings with SolidWorks

  2. Build simple, bespoke robots using commercial-off-the-shelf raw materials

  3. Understand principles of statics (classical mechanics) and apply them to complex systems

  4. Identify the materials suitable / unsuitable for a specific purpose as well as their general manufacture and end-of-life techniques

  5. Identify the dominant thermodynamic properties present in a system OR general purpose of an RC circuit

  6. Synthesize basic engineering design topics into a broad understanding of many engineering problems

  7. Investigate the business aspects of a technical engineering project

Student Outcomes

  1. Identify, formulate, and solve simple engineering problems by broadly applying principles of engineering design and systems thinking

  2. Apply engineering design and systems thinking to produce solutions that meet needs specified by the stakeholders of a given problem

  3. Break complex engineering projects into their composite parts using interdisciplinary skills such as computer-aided design, sensor arrays, materials properties, and static mechanics

  4. Effectively communicate technical aspects of low- to medium-complexity with a range of audiences

  5. Develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions

  6. Acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies

  7. Function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
