After passing the Qualifying Examination, the student becomes a Ph.D. candidate. Together with the dissertation advisor, the candidate selects a Ph.D. topic and a doctoral advisory committee. Before defending the dissertation, the student is required to defend the dissertation proposal. It is recommended that this proposal defense be held no less than six months before planned date for final defense of the dissertation
