Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, two-spirit, and queer experiences have been rendered in literature from the beginnings of history. In spite of this, the modern era has often been marked by the exclusion and elision of such experiences and identities. This course engages texts across the global canon of queer literature to explore and understand the different social forms that gender and sexuality has taken historically and the variety of ways these categories are currently experienced. Central to this course are both differences in gendered and sexual experiences across the world and the intersection of these categories with others, such as race, ethnicity, religion, disability, and class.
