Course Description

This course is a survey of cultural theory in the humanities examining a wide array of cultural, social, and political theories, from the 19th century to contemporary currents of queer theory, postcolonialism, and antiracist philosophy. Readings might include, but are not limited to, Marx, Nietzsche, and Freud; Frankfurt School philosophers such as Herbert Marcuse and Erich Fromm; feminist thinkers such as Simone de Beauvoir, Silvia Federici, and Audre Lorde; postcolonial theorists such as Frantz Fanon and Edward Said; thinkers in the African diasporic intellectual tradition such as Cedric Robinson and Angela Davis; and queer theorists such as Judith Butler and Sara Ahmed.
