Course Description

This course will examine the sociological perspective of the nature, causes, measurement, treatment, and prevention of crime. To that end, we will discuss sociological definitions of crime, the nature and prevalence of various types of crime, how sociology measures crime rates, and criminological theories invoked to explain crime. Furthermore, we will study societal factors associated with crime and both formal (official) and informal control of crime and offenders.
